I'm going to guess that if you asked your younger students what music they want to learn, there's a decent chance the answer would come from a video game.

For a lot of kids (and plenty of adults), the music we feel most connected to is a soundtrack we heard over and over while playing our favorite game.

It’s so much fun to ask your students what games they play, and then teach them some of that music.

Kids practice music they're excited about.
Period.

It's awesome music.
Game soundtracks are full of the stuff we already love to teach: melody, rhythm, harmony, and recurring themes that change as the story changes. Many are written for full orchestra!

It gets people talking about your studio.
When a kid plays the Zelda theme at your recital, other kids notice. Parents film it, and the video gets texted to grandma and posted online. That word of mouth is how most studios get their best new students anyway.

It helps students stay.
Students who feel like lessons are custom to them, tend to stick around long term.

Asking good questions before you make a lesson plan is a great habit for private teachers to adopt.
