inBachs / Tips For Improving Your Private Music Studio
What’s up, musician friends!!
Welcome to inBachs, where I’m bringing you my personal take on running and scaling a successful music studio each week. This space is all about sharing real talk, industry insights, and practical tips you can actually use to build a thriving studio.
I’m excited to dive deeper with you all, sharing my thoughts on everything from student retention and studio policies to effective marketing strategies. My goal is to make this a valuable resource that keeps you connected to what’s working (and what’s not!) for private music teachers everywhere.
This newsletter is also a place where I want your voice. Let me know how we can make this your go-to resource each week, and tell me what you’d love to see covered here. Thanks for being here, and let’s keep building together! 🎶
From the Founder’s Corner
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that building a studio isn’t just about teaching—it’s about creating a business that supports your life and passion. Last week, I announced a new collaboration with a colleague in the industry, and together we’ll be sharing free resources and educational content designed specifically for studio owners.
This month, I’m focusing on studio growth essentials. I put together this newsletter because I was getting a ton of requests for simple but powerful steps to grow your studio, including tips on organic marketing, refining your policies, and setting rates that match your value.
Ready to take your studio to the next level? Here are some quick-win strategies:
Clear and Effective Policies
If you want to protect your time and create consistency in your studio, start with your policies. Clear expectations (makeup lessons, cancellations, and payments) set the foundation for a smoother experience for both you and your students. This is a GREAT time of year if you want to make and announce changes in your policy!!
Pro Tip: Update your policies to reflect what works best for your studio. Communicate any changes to students in a positive, forward-looking way.
How to Get Started: If your policies need a refresh, try listing the three biggest challenges you face in running your studio. Start by building policies around those areas.
Trending: I’m noticing that so many studio owners are switching to a flat-rate monthly tuition model! Here’s a full breakdown of this tuition model.
Creating a Website that Works
Your website is like the front door to your studio—make it welcoming! An effective site doesn’t just showcase your services but also makes it easy for new students to get in touch.
Pro Tip: Keep your website simple, clear, and focused on what makes your studio unique. A “Book a Trial Lesson” or “Free Consultation” button at the top of your homepage is an easy way to streamline new inquiries.
How to Get Started: Use a platform like Squarespace to build a simple website.
We have been seeing great results with the studios in our Outside The Bachs: Scale program. As a Squarespace Circle partner we can provide backend design and SEO support for your studio. We have also found many benefits from using studio management software integrations.
