as a musician looking grow their professional career
If you feel like you should be posting more to grow your music career, increase your chances of getting more opportunities or to grow a personal brand, here’s what works for me on days when I don’t feel like creating. Here are are the steps:
Set up. Use a music stand! There might be an extra one available and I find that the angles that it captures makes for a pretty authentic looking video. Bonus points if you can use the bigger, higher quality camera on your phone and hide your screen for less distractions.
Forget it. Take a breathe, and a moment to forget about your phone. Continue on with what you were doing, practicing, performing, teaching a lesson, composing, taking zoom call.. What we’re trying to do with the footage is get authentic bits where we aren’t acting - it helps to have very real, authentic posts and it’s fun to see this on social media in an age where it’s easy to artificially create practically anything imaginable, so let’s be human about it.
Create. You’re going to end up with some longer clips, if you set your phone up to record for an hour. Load you clip into your app of choice for editing (I’ve been loving Instagram’s Edits lately)
Cut. Be really brutal in the cuts. We are going from potentially and hour of video to the Reels limit of less than 3min. If there are any clips of other people’s faces, voices or identifying info, delete those. Remove the silences, filler sentences or less entertaining clips and keep ONLY the best ones.
Package. How many Reels is going to come out of this footage? Is there a new series or maybe just a one time post? Think critically about the text you’ll use on screen - does it add beneficial context to what’s happening in the video? How can you add inspiration/aspiration/education? Would it benefit from a voiceover? How important is the choice of music (if any)
Schedule. I’m a huge fan of scheduling my posts, instead of just publishing in the moment. It allows me to batch create when I’m feeling creative. I also appreciate that it gets rid of unnecessarily checking notifications and overall just makes the process of posting a little less scary. Does time of day matter, maybe a little bit? But I would rather it gets scheduled so that I can check the box and move on to the next thing in life and not overthink too much. Every time you post, there’s actually a lot to learn - you are also building up a callus that makes it mentally easier to post more often.
These are the steps I followed to make this Reel on my Instagram. But I’m curious, have you tried any of these steps before? Does it spark any ideas for you? If it does, feel free to tag me in your next post and I’d love to see what you come up with :)
