inBachs / Growing My Vocal Empowerment Lesson Studio

Hey everyone! My name is Alyssa and I’m taking over this week’s inBachs! I wanted to share a little about my journey working in the private music studio world and in vocal empowerment lessons.

When I first started teaching voice, I didn’t fully grasp the world of running a music business. I knew I wanted to help people find their voices, not just as singers but as individuals with something unique to share. My own journey fueled that passion, but as my studio grew, I began realizing that my goals for teaching and my business needed to align more clearly.

When I opened my studio in 2017, I was teaching a handful of students, driven by my desire to share the techniques and experiences that helped me build my own vocal power. Over time, my teaching evolved to incorporate not just technical skills, but a focus on vocal empowerment, something deeply personal to me. Working alongside other studios in the Outside The Bachs community has given me the confidence and clarity to make decisions that enhance both my students’ experiences and my own work-life balance.

Here are a few key changes I’ve implemented in my studio since opening:

1. Refining Teaching Hours for Better Focus

One of my biggest shifts has been changing my weekly teaching hours to better fit my life and energy levels. Rather than overloading my schedule, I now teach private lessons within set hours that help me stay fully present and engaged with each student. This change has made my work more sustainable and allowed me to give my best to every student I teach.

2. Integrating Vocal Empowerment

Vocal empowerment has always been part of my personal mission, and I’ve started incorporating it formally into my studio. This involves more than singing; it’s about building courage, self-awareness, and the ability to express true vocal power. Drawing on techniques that helped me overcome my own fears, I now guide my students not just in singing, but in breaking free from self-imposed limitations and finding the confidence to embrace their unique sound.

3. Using Data to Make Confident Business Decisions

As a coach and instructor, I’m passionate about helping people, but I realized I needed a clearer view of my business metrics. I’ve been able to understand and track the data around my studio, allowing me to make more informed, confident business decisions. I now know which changes help us grow, and I’m able to look at my business from a broader perspective—something that felt overwhelming before.

4. Creating Boundaries for Ideal Student Fit

One of the most impactful changes I’ve made is establishing clear boundaries within my studio to ensure each student is an ideal fit. I now have the tools to recognize whether a new student aligns with our studio’s focus on vocal empowerment and personal growth, creating a supportive environment for both my students and myself.

This journey has been about more than just building a studio; it’s been about creating a space where students can explore and expand their unique voices while feeling truly supported. I’m grateful for the experiences that have shaped my teaching style—training at Scarpell Studio alongside artists like Pink, embracing both powerful and emotional styles of singing, and my background in stress management, healing, and reiki.

Building a studio has taken hard work, introspection, and the right support, but it’s worth it to see my students realize how special their voices are. And if you’re thinking about building a teaching business, I can say with full confidence: don’t be afraid to reach out and find guidance. It’s an investment in both your vision and the voices you’ll help bring to life.

As part of the Outside The Bachs team, I get to help private music studio owners grow their studios, connect with students, and build strong, lasting teaching practices. If you have questions about your studio goals, please reach out to us for a strategy session at outsidethebachs.com
