inBachs / Finally Defining Your Ideal Students

There are a lot of misconceptions that are out there commonly amongst musicians and private music studios, especially when it comes to marketing and business structure.

Things like:

  • “If I’m a great player, students will just come to me.”

  • “Having a policy is a later issue, I can just figure it out as I go.”

  • “I’ll implement a policy and organization once my studio is larger.”

  • “I just need to make my lessons accessible to everyone, so I’ll charge the cheapest rate.”

While I see merit in all those arguments, I also think that when you act like a professional, and I’m not saying these musicians aren’t acting like professionals, but when you have structure and organization in your business and it presents as very professional, it becomes so easy for students or parents to look at the service you’re offering, fully understand the value, and see that it’s for them specifically.

For example, a lot of studios will say, “I will teach anyone that pays me.” And that’s great in theory, but there are students that you are more effective in supporting. You might even be a better teacher for them, they might get better results working with you because that alignment is stronger in the goals they have or the technical challenges they’re experiencing.

Personality could just be a different vibe. And if you’re working with students that you know are a fit, their results improve, and you’re more fulfilled. You enjoy those lessons more.

So yes, we can teach anyone who will pay us, but if we’re really open-minded and willing to analyze who it is that we’re most excited about working with or who we can support the best and most effectively, that marketing can be really focused.

Why It’s Worth Your Time To Work Through Your “Ideal Student” Profile

When you take the time to define your “ideal student,” everything in your studio starts to click into place. Your marketing feels more natural, your lessons feel more rewarding, and the right students begin to find you because your message speaks directly to them. It’s not about limiting who you teach, but about creating clarity and alignment in your studio that benefits everyone involved.
